We have learned that dying is an integral and fundamentally human stage of living, and that when physical and emotional needs are sensitively met, the journey toward death – though always difficult – can be a rich and profound experience that gives meaning and completeness to life.

(Source: The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and the hospice palliative care movement, in partnership with The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, launched the Living Lessons® campaign to open that public dialogue and to promote understanding of the quality care that is possible at the end of life.)

Valley Hospice Foundation

“Hospice responds to the need in all of us - the need to feel that when our time comes to die that we will do so in an environment that reduces physical suffering and emotional anguish -an environment that far exceeds the color of a wall or the look of the building, but is the creation of skilful and supportive individuals committed to helping people confront death calmly, with dignity and with as little pain as possible.”

The Valley Hospice Foundation is a story of vision and patience. The campaign for a hospice in the Annapolis Valley is a shining example of the good that comes from individuals and organizations seeing a need in their community and working together to find the best way to fill it.

In this case we recognize that many people in the Annapolis Valley community, living with a life limiting illness, do not have the support necessary to live their final days at home in comfort, and that the continuum of their care could be completed with the addition of a hospice away from the acute care environment of the hospital.

The hospice will help people complete their final journey peacefully, with their pain and symptoms controlled, and surrounded by caring volunteers, specially trained health care professionals and families and friends.
